The Zet Veloc creek boat

basically a Zet Raptor for smaller, lighter paddlers

The Zet Veloc is a smaller version of the Raptor and is designed for lighter paddlers. It is 10cm shorter, weighs 1kg less and has 20 litres less volume.

Performance-wise it is fractionally slower than the Raptor being a bit shorter but is slightly more stable.

If you are thinking about a Veloc we'd recommend you demo a Raptor and then buy a Veloc, assuming you like it.

All the other performance features of the Raptor are present on the Veloc, namely:

  • Displacement hull with just enough edge
  • Fast hull with a nice amount of rocker
  • Variable hull thickness – Zelezny Technology - Zet Kayaks
  • No holes drilled around the cockpit
  • Front and rear buoyancy retention pillars
  • Robust seating
  • No DVT risk
  • The plastic carries a 4 year warranty
  • The outfitting carries a 2 year warranty
  • Free airbags

Veloc Creek Boat Paddling tips

Every new boat takes a bit of getting used to. Here's a few tips from our Team Paddlers on how to get the best out of your new Veloc.

1. Velocs have fairly large rear volume so don't be in a big hurry to move the seat forward. Try paddling her with the seat fully to the rear first.

2. Get her on edge. Velocs have an incredibly stable hull. You can get them to virtually 90 degrees on their sides and they still feel stable. But if you want to turn your Raptor fast, lean it over. Use positive body control to engage the front rails and carve the boat quickly into and out of eddies and create quick turns on the water.

3. She works better if you paddle aggressively. Velocs are faster than other creekboats and everything works better if you paddle aggressively.

4. Set up early and read far ahead. This, combined with an aggressive style makes the boat fly over and through everything you throw at her.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for a creekboat you cannot go far wrong with the Zet Veloc. It is basically a smaller version of the Raptor and behaves almost identically on the water.

In our tests however we would not seriously recommend this for anyone over about 5'8" tall. As creek boat go you'll probably find it a bit cramped if you are taller than this. If you are taller than 5'8 go for a Raptor unless you have particularly short legs or low body weight.
